Job Summary

Please note, this is an internal search limited to current UM-Flint CHS Senior Faculty at the University of Michigan-Flint. 

The College of Health Sciences at the University of Michigan-Flint is currently searching for an internal candidate for as the inaugural HEART Research Advisor. The HEART Research Advisor position is a 10% administrative appointment. The desired start date is within the fall 2024 semester.

HEART: Health Equity, Action, Research, and Teaching

Mission:
The purpose of CHS HEART is to improve health and healthcare access for uninsured and underinsured in Flint and Genesee County through interprofessional provision of health services to address community identified health inequalities.

HEART Objectives:
The main objective of CHS HEART is to improve health and healthcare access for the Flint and Genesee County residents it serves by upholding the following values:

  1. Health Equity: HEART members will serve as leaders to address social justice, racial/ethnic health disparities, and social determinants of health in the Flint region.
  2. Care and Compassion: HEART members will provide evidence-based care with empathy and respect for the dignity of individuals and groups.
  3. Sustained Service: Members will commit to ongoing service through interprofessional collaboration and community engagement.
  4. Learner Centered: HEART will develop students dedicated to advancing health equity and professional integrity.

    Responsibilities*

    • The HEART Research Advisor will assist faculty with implementation of community focused research studies, focusing specifically on projects that stem out of our CHS service projects. 
    • The HEART Research Advisor will help guide HEART engaged faculty in evaluating the effectiveness and community impact of our HEART programming, with support from the Associate Dean of Research. 
    • The HEART Research Advisor will also serve as the research liaison with the Dean's Office regarding HEART research logistics and grant activities. 
      Activities that the HEART Research Advisor will participate in include:
      • Advising faculty on implementation of HEART related projects. This includes but is not limited to advising on matters such as: regulatory issues (e.g. submitting the IRB applications through eResearch), formulating a research question and appropriate research design, participant recruitment, data collection and data safety considerations; data analysis; dissemination of study findings.
      • Working with the CHS Associate Dean and Office of Research to identify potential grants that may be helpful to advance HEART services and research
      • Identify any operational research concerns for HEART related research and liaison with the CHS Dean's Office regarding these concerns, e.g. establishing a method to de-identify patient data
      • Participation on CHS HEART Committee

    Please note, this is an internal search limited to current CHS faculty members who hold the needed experience and education to be considered an associate tenure or clinical-track professor or higher at time of application.

    Required Qualifications*

    • Senior faculty rank in a CHS department
    • Record of publications in peer-reviewed journals 
    • Record of presentations at national conferences 
    • Knowledge and experience with community based research    
    • Knowledge of research designs such as experimental, observational, qualitative, survey/questionnaires, systematic reviews
      • Active researcher utilizing one or more research designs including experimental, observational, qualitative, survey/questionnaires, systematic reviews 
    • Knowledge of the translation of new research results/findings into practice
    • Knowledge of use of appropriate statistical procedures in research, e.g. SPSS and other statistical software packages
    • Ability to mentor junior and less experienced faculty in the entire research process (from conceptual idea to dissemination)

    Modes of Work

    The work requirements allow both onsite and offsite work and an employee has an expected recurring onsite presence. On occasion, the employee may be required and must be available to work onsite more frequently if necessitated by unit leadership or their designee and/or the job requirements.
