Supervisory Optometrist
Full Job Description

Summary

This position serves as the Supervisory Optometrist in an ambulatory clinic setting. The purpose of this position is to provide professional supervisory and clinical services to ensure the delivery of eye care services improves the visual and overall health of the patients. The incumbent will report to the Clinical Director of the Clinton Service Unit.

This position is open until the vacancy is filled. It may be extended or closed prior to the current closing date.

Duties

  • Directly exercises both technical and administrative supervision of the optometry providers and staff.
  • Administer continuous quality improvement program to evaluate quality, appropriateness, and effectiveness of the eye care provided.
  • Provide full range of clinical and surgical services that may require the application of advanced instrumentation, procedures, and techniques in the detection and correction of ocular problems.
  • Consult with and advises members of the medical staff concerning ocular complex cases.
  • Oversee and conduct educational programs for patients, staff, and other providers.

This is a designated position covered by Public Law 101-630, requiring contact or control over Indian children. Due to this requirement, the agency must ensure that persons hired for these positions have not been found guilty of or pleaded nolo contendere or guilty to certain crimes.

A one-year supervisory/managerial probationary period may be required upon selection/placement.

Measles and Rubella immunization required for selectees born after 1957 and seasonal influenza immunization is required for all staff working in Indian Health Service health care facilities.

COVID-19 vaccination is required for all selectees prior to entrance on duty.

The selected individual is required to obtain and maintain medical staff clinical privileges, including any licensure requirements. If privileges are not obtained or maintained during employment, the employee will be subject to adverse actions, up to and including removal from Federal service.

Background Investigation: If you are selected for this vacancy, you must undergo a pre-employment fingerprint check and background investigation. Fingerprint results and background investigation documentation must be cleared prior to hire. After you begin your employment, your continued employment is contingent upon the outcome of a complete background investigation as determined by the sensitivity level of your position. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

BASIC REQUIREMENT(S):

Education: Applicants must have a Doctor of Optometry degree from an educational program that is accredited by the (ACOE) at the time the degree was obtained. Must submit a copy of your transcripts.

- AND -

Licensure: Applicants must have received a passing score on the (NBEO) examinations and possess a current, full, and unrestricted license to practice optometry in a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. Must submit a copy of your license with the expiration date.

In addition, to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below-

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

GS-12: You must meet one of the following requirements to meet the GS-12 grade level:
  • Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of professional experience as an optometrist that is equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Oversee the work of subordinate staff involved in optometric care services which include preparation of work performance plans, schedules, and work evaluations; Diagnose and treat visual and ocular problems through external and internal physical examination of the eye, adnexa, and surround tissues; Perform clinical and surgical services that require application of advanced instrumentation, procedures, and techniques in the detection and correction of ocular problems; Administer quality improvement program to evaluate quality of care; OR
  • One year completion of a residency program in an institution accredited for such training.
