Job Summary

The Clinical Genetics Branch (CGB), Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics (DCEG), National Cancer Institute (NCI), National Institutes of Health (NIH), is recruiting a physician to serve as Staff Clinician.

DCEG is committed to discovering and understanding the genetic architecture of cancer, including the identification of common and rare loci for cancer risk, exploration of underlying functional mechanisms and the impact of environmental exposures, and use of genetic variants for risk stratification and prevention. For more information visit the DCEG website.

With DCEG, the CGB conducts interdisciplinary research of individuals and populations at high genetic risk of cancer to improve understanding of cancer etiology and to advance clinical care. CGB's research combines clinical, genetic, genomic, epidemiologic, behavioral, statistical, and laboratory scientific research modalities to improve prevention, screening, and management in high-risk individuals and population.

Current active clinical protocols target hereditary cancer susceptibility syndromes including Li-Fraumeni syndrome, RASopathies, inherited bone marrow failure syndromes, and familial melanoma. Study-derived biospecimens are routinely leveraged into collaborative, laboratory-based, etiologically oriented analyses of genomics and molecular susceptibility. CGB seeks to expand the current behavioral/counseling and psychosocial research components integrated across studies of families at high genetic risk of cancer.

The Staff Clinician, working under the direction of the Branch Director, will be responsible for the clinical evaluations and genetic risk assessments of individuals and families at high risk of cancer participating in CGB's protocols. They will be responsible for coordinating CGB's multi-disciplinary psychosocial research program and working with the Branch Director on protocol development, as well as implementation and analyses of such studies. Duties will also include shared mentoring supervision of CGB trainees and administrative staff and study management (human subjects' research approvals, data coding and cleaning, and coordinating relevant contracts across CGB). Independent work on analyses and pilot projects will be encouraged.

Required Qualifications

The successful candidate must hold a doctoral degree in a relevant discipline (e.g., medicine, nursing, or public health) and have at least ten years of experience in qualitative and quantitative approaches to psychosocial research related to clinical cancer genetics and/or genetic risk assessment. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with highly committed and talented researchers with expertise in clinical cancer genetics and cancer-related psychosocial research, as well as career development training opportunities.
