Exciting opportunity for one (1) Solid Waste (SW) Preventive Maintenance Specialist, also known as an Oiler, performs essential maintenance tasks for Solid Waste vehicles and equipment. These include oil and filter changes, pressure washing of vehicles and equipment, vehicle and equipment inspections, greasing and lubrications, tire changes, mounting and demounting and road calls for flats on the road and transfer stations, plus using the Faster database for information input and extraction. Scheduled maintenance is crucial to minimize breakdowns and keep equipment performing optimally.

Shop personnel play an essential role in daily operations. They provide critical maintenance for vehicles and equipment, ensuring smooth functioning. Assigned tasks include vehicle and equipment services to maintain preventative maintenance schedules. Each maintenance task is significant due to its impact on the Cedar Hills Landfill and Transfer Stations' daily operations.
 
In addition to filling one (1) Career Service SW Preventive Maintenance Specialist position, we may use this recruitment to create a list of candidates for any potential vacancies in similar positions within the next 12 months.

This is a great opportunity for someone currently or formerly working in a shop environment interested in expanding their knowledge in light automotive vehicles, medium, heavy-duty truck, and construction equipment. You will work with very knowledgeable personnel in the industry of solid waste while learning and experiencing the level of dedication and commitment maintenance employees provide keeping our facilities operational.

Job Duties

What You Will Be Doing:  

  • Perform preventative maintenance and safety inspections on vehicles, equipment, and machinery.
  • Perform lubrication duties, select appropriate lubricants for machinery, including oil servicing, greasing, oil changes, filter changes and oil flow rate adjustment.
  • Research and document differences in machinery lubrication and filtration systems, recommend improvements and modifications, develop procedures for lubrication functions.
  • Fuel, pressure wash, hand wash, steam clean vehicles, trailers, and equipment.
  • Perform light-duty mechanical maintenance on vehicles and heavy equipment which may include:
    • install and service batteries 
    • adjust brakes
    • replace air cleaners and light bulbs
    • check air pressure and adjust as needed
    • repair tubes and other mechanical parts in vehicles and equipment
    • replace wiper blades
  • Other duties as assigned. 

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

Qualifications You Bring:

  • Minimum of two (2) years of recent work experience in an automotive or heavy equipment service or repair shop.
  • Working knowledge on a variety of motorized vehicles (e.g. Light vehicles, Heavy Duty vehicles, and construction type equipment).
  • Knowledge and demonstrated experience of general lubrication requirements.
  • Knowledge and demonstrated experience in the use of basic hand and air tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow and provide written and oral instructions.
  • Skill in distinguishing different types of oils and lubricants

Required Licenses:    
  • Possess valid Commercial Driver's License Class A or Class B upon hire with valid medical card
  • Ability to obtain Automotive Service Excellence T8 Preventative Maintenance and Inspections Certificate.
  • Ability to obtain Tire Industry Association Certification in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Supplemental Information

Working Conditions:

  • Work Location: The work associated with this position will be located: Cedar Hills Landfill, 16645 228th Avenue SE, Maple Valley, WA and FarWest Maintenance Location, 201 SW 34th St, Renton, WA.
  • Work Schedule: These positions work a 40-hour workweek and are overtime eligible with prior Supervisor approval. These positions may be required to work alternate work schedules to support core service hours. Service hours are weekdays 6a.m.-11 p.m. Shifts are M-F 6 - 2:30 p.m. or M-F 2:30 to 11 and weekends W - Sat or Sun - Wed 6 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Shifts are bid by seniority. The Solid Waste Division is only closed Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day. In this position, you are considered an essential employee and will be expected to work during weather, health and other emergency events.
  • Union Representation: This position will be represented by International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 302.
  • Physical Environment: This position requires the ability to stand for extended periods of time, climb on equipment or use a Versa Lift and pressure wash for extended periods of time with pressures up to 5000 PSI. Requires the ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds of equipment and tools. Requires the ability to work on uneven grades, slopes, surfaces, and terrain in inclement weather and other adverse conditions such as dust, odor, high volume noise and heavy traffic. There may be periods of sustained physical effort.
