The Pharmacist Resident participates in planned clinical and administrative functions and learning experiences with program emphasis on developing proficiency in clinical skills, leadership, management, managed care pharmacy practice, quality improvement, and teaching, education, and dissemination of knowledge. The Resident will develop competencies, skills, and ability to apply drug therapy knowledge, becoming a managed care pharmacist clinician with diverse patient care, leadership and education skills who is eligible for board certification and postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training. During the year, the Pharmacist Resident will achieve professional competence in the delivery of patient care and managed care pharmacy practice.
The Pharmacist Resident, with oversight of by preceptors, develops, implements, and communicates to internal and external stakeholders, and manages or assists in managing pharmacy initiatives, programs and services that ensure clinically appropriate and cost-effective use of medication that aligns with and supports Premera's corporate goals that are both clinical and financial goals. The individual will develop the skills necessary to work effectively across the company with multiple stakeholders, including Pharmacy, Medical Services, Care Management, Health Care Economics, Actuary, Quality, Product Services, and other departments and organizations.
The Pharmacist Resident may be assigned responsibility in any of the following, under the guidance of the Resident Advisory Committee:
- Contribute to the strategic direction of Premera's Pharmacy Program; make recommendations and execute on corporate-wide Pharmacy initiatives.
- Collaborate in developing, implementing, and managing clinical drug utilization strategies and provide Pharmacy business support to key internal and external stakeholders.
- Manage and lead projects in all areas, including patient care, utilization management/prior authorization, medical policy, pharmacy operations, formulary management, specialty pharmacy program and pharmacy business management.
- Provide clinical drug information support, drug utilization management, including prior authorization review, formulary management, and business support to internal and external stakeholders.
- Produce, analyze and present pharmacy cost trends, clinical and managed care presentations, and Pharmacy communication materials for designated market geographies.
- Support Pharmacy benefit design development in collaboration with Product Services, Actuary, and the Pharmacy Benefit Manager partner.
- Support medical management and clinical initiatives of Premera companies.
- Perform drug/medication therapy management to support the management of drug utilization on the medical benefit, including case and disease management.
Assist the Provider and Customer Engagement in:
- Providing consultative services to large and mid-size employer groups.
- Educating account managers, producers and clients about pharmacy programs and benefits.
- Assisting in developing and maintaining provider and member communication materials that support clinical pharmacy programs.
- Support and serve as a preceptor for pharmacy students, introducing them to formulary, drug information, utilization management, outreach activities and care management activities.
Complete twelve (12) months of training program to meet the competency areas, goals, and educational objectives for PGY1 Pharmacy Residencies established by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) consisting of the following rotations approved by the Resident Advisory Committee:
- Two major projects (longitudinal rotation).
- Other longitudinal rotations.
- Rotations in key operational areas
- Direct patient care 67% of the time
- One-month rotations at the AMCP Foundation and ICER
- Direct patient care through weekly prior auth review for both medical and prescription drugs
What you will bring:
- Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree from an ACPE-accredited college of pharmacy, or PharmD candidate eligible for graduation prior to the beginning of the residency year. (Required)
- Eligible for licensure as a Pharmacist in Washington State. Licensure must be obtained prior to October 31st of the residency year. (Required)
- Selection and assignment to Premera through the ASHP Resident National Matching Program (Required)
- U. S. citizenship, or Green Card valid through the end date of the Program. (Required)

The pay for this role will vary based on a range of factors including, but not limited to, a candidate’s geographic location, market conditions, and specific skills and experience.
The salary range for this role is posted below; we generally target up to and around the midpoint of the range.
National Plus Salary Range:
$43,200.00 - $90,000.00*National Plus salary range is used in higher cost of labor markets including Western Washington and Alaska.
