Job Summary

The Office of Culture, Community and Equity (OCCE) K-20 programs serve as a pathway for a diverse group of pre-college students to discover engineering as a profession and choose Michigan Engineering as the place where they want to prepare for their future. OCCE is seeking a highly organized, energetic, enthusiastic, and team-oriented individual to serve in a key instructional leadership role with emphasis on new curriculum design and implementation.

This part-time position will work out of OCCE?s Michigan Engineering Zone (MEZ) location in midtown Detroit. The machine shop supervisor instructs and mentors high school students in the safe use and maintenance of tools and machines in our lab and machine shop areas. They model a professional safety culture while maintaining work space areas, tools, and supplies with the support of students and professional mentors. They must be comfortable adapting to new situations and resolving small issues independently. 

Responsibilities*

  • Instruct and mentor students in the proper use of 3D printers, CNC and manual machine tools, electronic test equipment, and soldering tools. Support the Michigan Engineering Zone staff in developing and delivering standardized training materials.
  • Maintain working areas, machinery, equipment, and working conditions in compliance with accepted standards.
  • Under the direction of the MEZ Director, promote diversity, equity and inclusion, and professional safety culture within the MEZ Workspace. 
  • Collaborate with student mentors including assisting in the training of new team members, communicating instructions, and supporting the development of MEZ work practices.
  • Coordinate receiving, inventory, storage, and disposal of supplies, materials, and tools used in the MEZ.
  • Support faculty, staff, and students with building electro-mechanical robotic systems and testbeds for robotics systems, in support of the annual FIRST Robotics challenges and competitions.

Required Qualifications*

  • Associate degree/trade certificate or 2 or more years of relevant experience.
  • Experience in the use and maintenance of 3D printers, the appropriate use of hand tools, CNC, and manual machine tools, electronic test equipment, and soldering tools.
  • Basic experience with CAD/CAM software and CNC programming.
  • Essential experience assembling and troubleshooting electrical circuits.
  • Experience working in a team-oriented organization, with a diverse workforce.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or another relevant discipline.
  • 3 years of relevant experience in a professional manufacturing or prototyping environment.
  • Experience teaching and mentoring others in the use of power and hand fabrication tools.
  • Experience in electrical circuits, hardware design, embedded software development, real-time control, and data acquisition, and mechanical/mechatronics design.
  • Experience with FIRST Robotics.
  • Experience working with youth in formal or informal roles.

Additional Information

  • This position (1 opening) is part-time and works approximately 20 hours per week.
  • Work hours are typically 3:30-7 Monday-Thursday, and Saturdays 10-4.
  • This position is grant-funded and therefore term-limited, from January-May 2024.
