Job Summary

This is NOT a vacancy announcement. By submitting your resume and questionnaire, you are joining our repository of interested applicants who can be considered to fill current and future Independent Contract Linguist opportunities. Contract Linguists are independent contractors who provide language services to the FBI’s Foreign Language Program.

Locations: Opportunities Available Nationwide

Working Hours: Normal business hours are 9:00am – 5:00pm, but hours may vary

Salary: Pay is hourly based on FBI tested language qualifications and language(s)

Key Requirements 

  • Must be a U.S. citizen
  • Must be able to obtain a Top Secret-SCI clearance
  • This opportunity requires a hearing examination 
  • Some travel may be required
  • Applicants must agree to be tested by the FBI Language Testing and Resources Unit. Contract Linguists at the FBI translate audio and written materials in summary and/or verbatim forms. They are also occasionally asked to interpret. In order to ensure Contract Linguists can meet the demands of the job, they must pass a language test battery, consisting of a series of language tests.

The mission of the FBI is to protect the American people and uphold the Constitution of the United States.

Major Duties

  • Translates and interprets a foreign language into English and vice versa. 
  • Verbatim translations and summaries are from written or recorded material. 
  • As required, interprets during polygraph examinations. Must be familiar with the equipment and techniques associated with the polygraph. In the event of a hostage or terrorist situation, may be called upon to take part in negotiations. 
  • Responsible for handling all requests for translations and interpretations from within the field office, other field offices, HQ, Legal Attaches, state, local and federal government agencies. 
  • Interprets during interviews/interrogations for investigative personnel. 
  • Performs necessary research to find correct terms and to understand the nature of the material translated. 

Qualifications and Evaluations 

Please make sure any language-based experience and education can be identified in your resume including experience in translating, interpreting, or other work requiring the use of English and a foreign language, training at the Defense Language Institute, Foreign Service Institute, or other comparable training.

Required Documents

To submit your interest, applicants must provide a complete application package by the closing date which includes:

  1. Your resume, specifically noting relevant Language work experience 
  2. A complete assessment questionnaire, including stated language(s) and self-assessment
  3. Other supporting documents (if applicable):
  • Notification of Personnel Action, SF-50 for federal employees
  • Veterans: DD 214; Disabled Veterans: DD 214, SF-15, and VA letter dated 1991 or later
  • Most recent Performance Appraisal for federal employees (not applicable to current FBI employees)
  • Memorandum for Record, if using to qualify

Documents that were uploaded one or more years ago will need to be uploaded again.  Although an applicant may see these documents within their current profile, the HR Specialists may not have access to view them.  All applicants are being asked to upload another copy (if applicable) to ensure the staffing units can review the complete application.

What to Expect Next

Once your complete submission is received we will compare your language abilities and skills to the FBI’s needs. If selected, you will be contacted by your local field office to schedule language testing. DUE TO THE HIGH VOLUME OF APPLICATIONS, APPLICANTS WHO ARE NOT SELECTED MAY NOT BE CONTACTED REGARDING THE STATUS OF THEIR APPLICATIONS. Your application will remain active in the system for one year. If you are not contacted within one year to schedule language testing, you may reapply to be reconsidered for the opportunity.

  • The FBI is in the Executive Branch of the federal government. It is one of the components of the Department of Justice (DOJ). The FBI is the principle investigative arm of the DOJ. All FBI positions are in the excepted service.
  • Applicants must be U.S. citizens and consent to a complete background investigation, urinalysis, and polygraph. You must be suitable for Federal employment; as determined by a background investigation.

Nepotism

To ensure compliance with an applicable preliminary nationwide injunction, which may be supplemented, modified, or vacated, depending on the course of ongoing litigation, the Federal Government will take no action to implement or enforce the COVID-19 vaccination requirement pursuant to Executive Order 14043 on Requiring Coronavirus Disease 2019 Vaccination for Federal Employees.
