Job Location

Position will primarily work at Main Duke University Hospital Campus, but has Academic and Clinical responsibility for Hospital Medicine Teams at the other Duke University Acute Care Hospitals, Duke Regional Hospital and Duke Raleigh Hospital, a Campus of Duke University Hospital and Academic responsibilities for the Hospital Medicine team at the Durham VA.

Job Summary

The Division Chief of the Division of Hospital Medicine within the Duke University Department of Medicine and the DUHS Hospital Medicine Program ("Division Chief") is responsible for

the leadership of a team of physician and administrative leaders that manage the Clinical, Educational and Academic missions of the Hospital Medicine Division (the "Division" or "DUHS Hospital Medicine") at Duke University Hospital ("DUH"), Duke Regional Hospital ("DRH"), and Duke Raleigh Hospital, a Campus of Duke University Hospital ("DRAH") and the Educational and Academic missions at the Durham Veteran's Affairs Hospital. The Division is comprised of a team of clinical providers who provide patient care primarily within an inpatient setting, including typical medical acute care inpatient units, hospital Emergency Departments, specialized and/or intensive care inpatient units, and upon occasion, in hospital-based outpatient setting. The Division Chief participates actively in the development, implementation monitoring and ongoing modification of strategic, tactical and operational plans that define, support, enhance and further Hospital Medical and Department of Medicine Educational and Academic goals and objectives. The Division Chief serves as leader of the team in all administrative and clinical duties and matters that involve Division of Hospital Medicine operations. The Division Chief supports the Medical Directors in supervision of all Hospital Medicine clinical personnel.

The Division Chief serves as an active member of the DUHS and DUH leadership team, the Department of Medicine Leadership and serves on DUH, DUHS and DOM committees, and routinely interacts with the Presidents and Chief Medical Officers ("CMO") of the relevant DUHS hospitals, Chair of the Duke University School of Medicine Department of Medicine, and other administrative/clinical leaders. The Division Chief works aggressively to build positive relationships and open lines of communication across the Duke Health community.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities:

Providers within the Duke Division of Hospital Medicine diagnose and manage a variety of medical conditions in adults primarily in the inpatient setting. Our providers include physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants who provide care to patients primarily in the inpatient setting.

  • Working with Duke leadership, provide input and collaborate on internal medicine services of DUHS for strategic planning, innovative care models, quality improvement and academic activities.
  • Understand clinical operations carried out by Duke University Health System as it relates to general internal medicine.
  • Shepherd the Hospital Medicine Division into their new status as a Division within Duke Department of Medicine.

Research Responsibilities:

  • Promote research activities within the Division to meet goals for scholarly activity, including the number of grant submissions, marshaling resources for research, encouraging collaborative interactions
  • Oversee and Cultivate a basic, translational and clinical research program within the Division/ Department of Medicine
  • Direct mentoring or identification of mentors for junior faculty and fellow research development

Educational Responsibilities:

  • Train future leaders in the fields of general internal medicine/hospital medicine through a variety of teaching opportunities
  • Share in the oversight of the fellowship program as well as faculty education and training programs

Administrative Responsibilities:

  • Shape and strengthen the programs in the Division of Hospital Medicine
  • Lead divisional strategic planning and participate in departmental strategic planning processes
  • Ensure divisional fiscal soundness
  • Oversee the growth and development of the faculty, trainees, and staff

Job Eligibility Requirements

Education

  • Graduate of accredited Medical School

Certification

  • Board Certified in Internal Medicine

License

  • Current and unrestricted medical license issued by NCMB with authorization to practice as a MD, DO or MBBS

Experience

Other

  • Eligible for appointment at the Associate Professor level or higher at Duke University School of Medicine
  • Commitment to academic excellence

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Technical - Clinical training and skills as mandated by the American Board of Internal Medicine for General Internal Medicine physicians
  • Non-Technical - Ability to work with others in a cooperative, collaborative manner.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • For clinician educators - strong clinical teaching skills.

Job Hours

Generally, 40 hours, Monday - Friday day-shift, but on occasion may need to work clinical 12 hour shifts, 7am - 7pm or 7pm - 7am.
