WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER

The Forest Restoration Crew will be a three-person crew working throughout the summer conducting forestry and restoration work on the Ottawa and Hiawatha National Forests in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, as well as on TNC owned properties. The job will be 95% field time in remote locations and supervised remotely from Marquette.

The Forest Restoration Crew will participate in specific land management activities on National Forest Lands and TNC owned lands including assisting in large scale tree planting efforts, tree planting area surveys, forestry tasks, along with some trail maintenance, invasive species management, and infrastructure surveys.

This position will be based in remote areas in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, and supervised out of the Marquette, MI office. This position is a temporary, full-time position lasting approximately five months and will begin on April 7, 2025 and end no later than September 5, 2025. The hourly compensation is $20.00 an hour. The position will be housed in Airbnbs, VRBOs, hotels, motels, or other accommodations in the Upper Peninsula. Camping in a campground is a possibility as necessary.

  • Will work in variable weather conditions, in remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.
  • Requires considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain. Including carrying heavy loads long distances in off trail situations.
  • Will require long hours in isolated settings.
  • Makes day to day decisions as delegated by supervisor.
  • May work under infrequent supervision.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING
  • High school diploma or GED and 1 year's training in science-related field or related experience in land management.
  • Experience recognizing plant and animal species.
  • Experience operating various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Experience working in a team environment.
  • Must be able to obtain related licenses or certifications as required. (e.g. First Aid, CPR, AED, ATV use, chainsaw use, bloodborne pathogens).

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated. Knowledge of Spanish language preferred.
  • 1 - 2 years' experience in land management or related field.
  • Experience working with or knowledge of natural systems.
  • Ability to follow instructions from colleagues/coworkers/team members.
  • PC, tablet, and/or mobile device familiarity, including database knowledge or understanding.
  • Experience using ArcGIS software and/or the Arc Field Maps application for data collection and navigation.
  • Map and compass navigation.
  • Ability to safely work in backcountry, wilderness, remote settings, and in and around lakes and streams.
  • Ability to safely use an ATV to transport materials and equipment.
  • Ability to safely use equipment like chainsaw, handsaws, drills, two-way radio, or similar equipment.

SALARY INFORMATION

The starting pay range for a candidate selected for this position is $20 per hour. This range only applies to candidates whose country of employment is the USA. Where a successful candidate's actual pay will fall within this range will be based on a variety of factors, including, for example, the candidate's location, qualifications, specific skills, and experience. Please note countries outside the USA would have a different pay range in the local currency based on the local labor market, and not tied to USA pay or ranges. Your geographic location will be confirmed during the recruitment.
