Description

The Adirondack Experience (ADKX) seeks an Exhibition Project Coordinator to oversee the creation of a new permanent, interactive, 2,100 square foot exhibition about the lives of African Americans, past and present, in the Adirondack region of northern New York. This will be a 30-month appointment beginning January 2025. The exhibition will open in June 2027. The selected candidate will report to the project's Guest Curator and help coordinate the participation of consulting scholars, community representatives, ADKX's staff, and outside contractors such as an exhibition designer, media designer, and audience evaluator. S/he will also be responsible for implementing an oral history project as well as a public collecting initiative to identify documents, photographs, and artifacts that are in private hands to help tell the story of the Adirondacks' Black community. This position is a full-time, 40-hours a week position, that may include occasional night and weekend work. The Exhibition Project Coordinator will be eligible for participation in our generous benefit package that includes health, dental, vision, and supplemental insurances, paid time off, and contribution to a 403b retirement account. Salary range for position is $38,000 - $42,000.

DUTIES INCLUDE:

  1. Research.
  1. Assist the Guest Curator with a review of the literature on African Americans in the Adirondack region and comparable, rural areas elsewhere.
  2. Identify relevant developments in the presentation of African American history recent in exhibitions.
  3. Write reports as required.
  1. Coordination of meetings and the communications among project team members.
  1. Arrange Zoom and in person meetings, record minutes, and follow up with participants to help keep everyone on task.
  2. Maintain project schedule.
  3. Assist the Guest Curator with drafting meeting agendas, exhibition outlines, artifact lists, and other planning documents.
  4. Serve as a liaison between the exhibition team and outside contractors such as the project architect, construction manager, and exhibition fabricator.
  1. Implementation of an oral history project and public collecting initiative to obtain by gift or loan historical materials for the exhibition.
  1. Collaborate with marketing and public relations staff to leverage social media to generate interest in, and leads for, oral history informants and public collecting initiatives.
  2. Make arrangements to interview oral history candidates and have interviews transcribed and indexed.
  3. Travel to community members to retrieve historical documents and artifacts donated to the project.
  4. Work with ADKX collections staff to facilitate cataloging of materials.
  5. Work with community partners, particularly North Country Public Radio, to publicize the public collecting initiative.

Position Requirements
  1. B.A. required, a graduate degree in Black Studies, American History, Museum Studies, or a related field is preferred.
  2. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  3. Strong administrative and organizational skills; attention to detail is critical.
  4. Ability to manage time efficiently, meet deadlines, and work under pressure.
  5. Ability to work independently and within a team.
  6. Excellent interpersonal skills.
  7. Driver's license and willingness to travel within the Adirondack Park and to nearby urban centers.
  8. Experience working in a museum or other setting involving public history is preferred as is experience working with African American community groups.
