Full Job Description

The Town of Wellesley, Massachusetts (pop. 28,747) is seeking highly qualified candidates for the position of Deputy Police Chief. Located 15 miles west of Boston in the Metrowest region, the Wellesley Police Department maintains coverage 24 hours a day and houses the Town of Wellesley Emergency Communication Center, which also dispatches the Wellesley Police Department.  The organization employs 61 full-time employees and responds to approximately 32,000 annual service calls of which approximately 1,600 are alarms, and 1,500 are medical responses. The department responded to and investigated over 1,000 motor vehicle accidents and conducted over 2,000 selective traffic enforcement posts and wrote approximately 8,000 motor vehicle citations.

 Reporting to the Chief of Police, the Deputy Chief of Police’s primary responsibilities are to assist the Chief in the day-to-day operations and business of the Police Department, supervising police personnel in the performance of their official duties, maintaining discipline, resolving and coordinating issues, concerns and grievances from the collective bargaining representatives, and to providing training and motivation.  The work requires the incumbent to perform complex and highly responsible duties requiring a high level of initiative and independent judgment to achieve Department goals and objectives.  This position also assists the Chief of Police in the planning, directing, coordinating, controlling, and staffing of all operations pertaining to the Wellesley Police Department, its sworn and civilian personnel, facilities, and equipment.  The Deputy Chief assumes responsibility and control of the Department in the Chief’s absence.

Minimum requirements include: Bachelor’s degree in Police Science, Public Administration, Criminal Justice, or a related field, seven years of progressively responsible law enforcement experience with at least three years of supervisory experience, possession of a valid license to carry a firearm, training and qualification in the use of handguns and certification as a full-time officer in accordance with the Municipal Police Training Committee and Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Commission, demonstrated experience and skill within the following critical areas: leadership, management, organizational and fiscal skills, modern policing and law enforcement principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment; working knowledge of applicable laws, ordinances, and department rules and regulations; budgeting; collaborative inter-agency relationships; and labor management relations in a unionized environment.  Preferred: Master's degree in police science, law enforcement, or a related field, a Juris Doctorate, or specialized training from FBI National Academy, FBI-LEEDA, or other specialized police training venue.

The salary range is $185,000 - $200,000 depending upon qualifications and experience.
