The New York University Silver School of Social Work (SSSW) invites applications for the Constance and Martin Silver Professor of Poverty Studies and Faculty Director of the McSilver Institute for Poverty Policy and Research. The 9-month tenured appointment will begin September 1, 2025.
The successful candidate will be named Faculty Director of the McSilver Institute for Poverty Policy and Research, will teach in the schools academic programs (BSW, MSW, PhD, and/or DSW), and will be engaged in university and professional service and leadership.
The McSilver Institute at New York University is nationally recognized for its scholarship and policy efforts and is an endowed research center whose mission is to disrupt generational poverty through research, policy and action. As Faculty Director of the NYU McSilver Institute, the ideal candidate will have an extensive research portfolio and will have demonstrated capacity to secure and oversee federal funding for research. The successful candidate will also be expected to lead the development of the McSilver Institutes interdisciplinary poverty research agenda and to mentor research staff, junior faculty and doctoral students. Expertise in areas related to the social and structural determinants of poverty (e.g., housing) is highly desirable, as is experience translating research into action and working with policymakers to advance policy change. A strong commitment to research addressing poverty, racial inequality, gender equity, and promoting mentorship, pay equity, diversity, and inclusion is essential. Additionally, the candidate will contribute to service within the school and broader university community.
Established in 2007, the McSilver Institute is the brainchild of Dr. Constance McCatherin Silver, a New York University alum and Trustee who was determined to establish a top-notch research institute to not only contribute to intellectual discourse, but to also find solutions that would disrupt generational poverty in communities most affected by inequality and injustice. NYU McSilver recognizes the interrelatedness of race and poverty and is dedicated to dismantling structural racism and all forms of systemic oppression. In addition to its research portfolio, NYU McSilver works in New York and nationally on a number of technical assistance, training and evaluation projects that involve multiple areas of expertise including: health homes/care management, social determinants of health screening, program evaluation, trauma-informed/resiliency-based care, managed care implementation, behavioral health business best practices, family peer support, engagement, value-based payments, payment reform and family-strengthening interventions. The institute employs over forty full time staff members and regularly hosts student interns. The Institute is funded mostly through federal and state grants and has been awarded over $85 million since its establishment.

A doctoral degree in social work or a related field is required, as is an outstanding record of scholarship commensurate with the career level of the candidate. Experience in research administration and leadership are essential.
In compliance with NYCsPayTransparencyAct, the annual basesalaryrange for this position is $175,000 - $275,000. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidates work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity,as well asmarket and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
In addition to the base salary associated with the academic appointment, the position includes a 12-month administrative supplement for the Faculty Director role.
