Job Summary

The Construction Inspector will review contractors' work to ensure compliance with MBTA project contracts, plans, and specifications.  The Construction Inspector will report to the Resident Engineer.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Review construction work to ensure conformance to plans and specifications.
  • Compute construction quantities and prepare reports for interim and final payments.
  • Review construction work of contractors and subcontractors to ensure compliance with contract documents, reporting any discrepancy to the Resident Engineer.
  • Perform inspections of construction materials at source and on project sites for conformity to specifications.
  • Assist the Resident Engineer in investigating and reporting construction and safety-related problems encountered in the field.
  • Participate in regular safety inspection "walk-downs".
  • Maintain a daily project diary, files, test reports, etc. as directed by the Resident Engineer or Project Manager.
  • Perform load counts of material delivered to construction sites.
  • Obtain samples of materials to be sent to the laboratory for testing purposes.
  • Drive a company or personal vehicle to visit work sites and assist at emergencies and/or events as needed.
  • Respond to each inquiry, whether from a customer, vendor, or co-worker courteously and professionally.
  • Work any shifts as assigned or directed.
  • Respond or report to work as directed by supervisory personnel for emergencies, extreme weather conditions, or any other abnormal conditions that impair service or the safety of service, twenty-four (24) hours per day, seven (7) days per week.
  • Adhere to the rules, regulations, collective bargaining agreements (if applicable), and policies of the Authority including the EEO, Anti-Discrimination and Anti-Harassment and Anti-Retaliation policies.
  • Perform all other duties and projects that may be assigned.

Minimum Requirements & Qualifications

  • An Associate Degree from an accredited institution.
  • Two (2) years of field experience working in commercial and/or large-scale construction projects.
  • Effective quantitative, organizational, and analytical skills.
  • The ability to effectively communicate with outside contractors, regulatory agencies, community organizations, and others on technical and sensitive matters.
  • The ability to successfully complete all Authority required training.
  • Have excellent customer service and conflict resolution skills.
  • The ability to provide internal and external customers with a courteous and professional experience.
  • The ability to work all shifts and/or locations as assigned or directed
  • Must possess a valid driver's license to operate a motor vehicle.
  • Be available to work twenty-four (24) hours per day, seven (7) days per week.
  • The ability to work effectively with a diverse workforce.

Substitutions Include

  • High School Diploma and Two to Four (2-4) additional years of experience working on commercial and/or large-scale construction projects may be substituted for the Associate's Degree requirement.
  • Two (2) additional years of experience working on commercial and/or large-scale construction projects, in addition to holding one or more of the following construction certifications may be substituted for the Associate's Degree requirement.  Acceptable Construction Certifications: Massachusetts Construction Supervisors License (CSL), AWS certified welding inspector (CWI), or a construction certification from either CMAA, NETTCP, or NICET.

  • Ability to uphold the rights and interests of the MBTA while building and maintaining effective relationships with employees and co-workers

  • Have a satisfactory work record for the two (2) years immediately prior to the closing date of this posting (unless if recent graduate), including overall employment, job performance, discipline, and safety records (infractions and/or offenses occurring after the closing of the posting and before the filling of a vacancy may preclude a candidate from consideration for selection)
  • Ability to pass a Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) check, comprehensive background screening, and medical Clinic screening, potentially including a physical examination and drug and alcohol screenings
  • Ability to work all shifts and / or locations assigned, directed, or necessary for this position, including (for some transit / operations roles) up to twenty-four (24) hours per day, seven (7) days per week as necessary to accommodate severe weather conditions, emergencies, or any other circumstances that may potentially impact service or the safety of service
