General Description of the Job Class Perform a variety of tasks assoc iated with the installation and maintenance of diagnostic, therapeutic and life support clinical equipment. Duties and Responsibilities of this Level Duties and Responsibilities of Level I Perform a variety of routi ne tasks associated with the installation, preventative maintenance, an d repair of a diverse range of clinical diagnostic and therapeutic equi pment. Note: Level I technicians are not assigned duties with life support equipment. Perform electrical safety tests on clinical equipment usi ng specialized test equipment. Assist in the support of Clinical Enginee ring???s systematic preventive maintenance program. Perform incoming in spections and complete documentation on clinical equipment. Deactivate obsolete equipment and use surplus and salvage protocols for removal. Re ceive and complete special clinical requests as assigned by supervisor. Notify user departments regarding status of repair requests that have no t been completed. Effectively communicates with clinical departments to obtain loaner or replacement equipment as required. Troubleshoot and r epair clinical equipment as assigned. Order, receive parts as needed per department policy. Document shipping and returns. Report all patient sa fety issues to manager and assist with correction of issue as assigned. Meet individual and team departmental performance standards on a consis tent basis. Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor. Maintain a clean and safe work place. Maintain good working relationships with fell ow workers, nursing and medical staff, and the general public. Maintain accurate and timely documentation in accordance with Department policy. May require travel to other Health System facilities as required to per form departmental functions. Complete all required Health System traini ng modules within the time allowed by policy. Follow all Duke Universit y Health System and departmental policies and procedures. Examples of de vices assigned for maintenance are: Sequential compression devices, Por table suction units, Suction regulators, Hepa units, Papr units, Kangaro o pumps, Heater cooler units, Infusion devices Perform other related du ties incidental to the work described herein. Duties and Responsibilitie s of Level II Perform all the duties and responsibilities of Level I plu s: Capable of being assigned duties involving the corrective and preven tative maintenance to life support equipment. Consistently perform inde pendently both routine and complex tasks associated with the installati on, maintenance, and repair of a diverse range of clinical equipment and integrated systems. Serve as a resource to Duke University Heath Syste m employees in the proper operation and maintenance of clinical equipme nt. Assist in identifying and recommending replacement of equipment that is obsolete, has extensive repair history, or has identified safety is sues. Must be proficient with prioritizing work assignments effectively in order to meet Departmental goals and standards. May be required to b e on-call and respond per department policy. Provide guidance and mentor ing to Level I technicians. With limited supervision, coordinate and man age routine projects from start to completion, performing any necessary communication and follow- up with equipment owner. Assist with conduct ing evaluations of equipment as required. When assigned, participate in the Device Incident Investigation process and provide follow up to mana gement per Department policy. Examples of devices assigned for maintenan ce are: Defibrillators, Incubators, Transport incubators, Patient monit ors systems, EEG devices, Pacemakers, EMG devices, ventilators Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein. Required Q ualifications at this Level Education: Associates Degree in Electronics or Biomedical Equipment Technology or Military specific medical equipme nt repair certification is required. Two years of military training in electronics or vocational training in electronics may substitute for th e degree requirement. Experience: Level I - No experience required, beyo nd degree/military/vocational training described above. Level II A mini mum of two years experience as a Biomedical Equipment Technician is req uired. Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification: Level I and II - A val id North Carolina Driver???s license with a good driving record. Level II- Qualify as a candidate for certification as a CBET or CLES by AAMI (Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation) Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Level I Maintenance skills in electronics, mech anical or electromechanical device repair. Knowledge of electronics tro ubleshooting. Knowledge of safety precautions applicable to the operatio n and maintenance of clinical equipment. Ability to comprehend and foll ow both written and oral instructions. Ability to work in a team enviro nment. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, clinical and medical staff, and the general public. A bility to demonstrate competency in the use and operation of all requir ed test equipment used for the maintenance of therapeutic and diagnosti c equipment. An elementary knowledge of e-mail and work order processes. Ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays if necessary. Ability to function in a sterile environment if necessary. Ability to keep neat an d accurate records.Level II All of Level I, plus the following: Ability to work with limited supervision. Capable of mentoring Level I technici ans. Ability to independently troubleshoot equipment, both technically and clinically. Significant working knowledge of physiology, anatomy, an d medical terminology, with emphasis in clinical application and troub leshooting. Significant knowledge and experience with Departmental softw are (e-,mail, database management, spreadsheet and word processor) app lications to provide necessary information to clinical staff. Must be ab le to carry callfor team or workgroup, respond according to policy, an d make decisions regarding emergency equipment repair. Minimum Qualifications


Education

Associates Degree in Electronics or Biomedical Equipment Technology or Military specific medical equipment repair certification is required. Two years of military training in electronics or vocational training in electronics may substitute for the degree requirement.


Experience

Level I - No experience required, beyond degree/military/vocational training described above. Level II A minimum of two years experience as a Biomedical Equipment Technician is required.


Degrees, Licensures, Certifications

Level I and II - A valid North Carolina Driver's license with a good driving record. Level II- Qualify as a candidate for certification as a CBET or CLES by AAMI (Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation)
